The assembly steps differ between these two types, so the first task is to identify which model you have. The wooden countertop version usually arrives with two or three shelves, side panels, and a back panel. The wall-mounted version includes a main frame, a mounting plate, and a set of screws and wall plugs.

Open the box and lay every part on a flat, clean surface. Check the printed parts list against what you have; missing or damaged pieces should be reported to Kmart customer service before you begin. You will need a Phillips-head screwdriver, and for the wall-mounted version, a drill with a masonry bit if you are fixing it to brick or plaster, plus a pencil and a spirit level. A soft cloth or a small rubber mallet can help tap panels together without scratching the finish.

Do not tighten every screw fully as you go. Leave them slightly loose until the whole frame is together, then go back and snug them up. This gives you room to adjust panels so they sit square. Assembling the Wooden Countertop Spice Rack

The wooden tiered rack is usually held together with cam locks, which are the round metal fittings with a slot, and cam bolts, which are the short screws with a domed head. The bolts should go into the holes marked for the shelves, not into the holes on the edges that join the side panels to the back.

Lay one side panel flat, then place the bottom shelf over its bolts, aligning each bolt with the hole in the shelf's edge. Push the shelf down so the bolts poke through, then slide the cam lock into the round hole on the outside face of the shelf. Turn each cam lock clockwise with a screwdriver until it clicks and locks the bolt head in place. Repeat this for the middle and top shelves, then attach the second side panel the same way.

Once both sides are on, slide the back panel into the grooves at the rear of the shelves. It should fit snugly without glue; if it is loose, a few small nails from the packet can hold it. Stand the rack upright and check that the shelves are level and the back panel sits flush. Tighten any loose cam locks, then wipe the surfaces with a dry cloth to remove fingerprints.

Assembling the Wall-Mounted Spice Rack

The wall-mounted rack comes in two main pieces: the mounting plate that screws to the wall, and the rack body that hangs on it. Begin by attaching the rack body to the mounting plate loosely, following the diagram in the manual. This is usually a simple hook-and-slot arrangement: the plate has two or three keyhole slots, and the rack has matching hooks that slide down into them.

Do not fix the plate to the wall until you have checked that the hooks align with the slots. Hold the assembled rack against the wall where you want it, mark the screw holes through the plate with a pencil, then set the rack aside. Drill pilot holes at your marks, insert the wall plugs that came with the rack, and screw the plate to the wall. Use a spirit level to make sure the plate is perfectly horizontal before you tighten the screws fully.

Lift the rack and slide it down onto the plate until it clicks or sits flush. Give it a gentle tug to confirm it is seated. If the rack feels loose, check that the hooks have fully engaged with the slots. Most Kmart wall racks also come with a small safety screw that goes through the bottom of the rack into the plate; fit this to stop the rack from being lifted off accidentally.

Leveling and Adjusting After Assembly

A rack that is not level will look wrong and can cause jars to slide. For the countertop version, place a spirit level on the top shelf and check it front to back and side to side. If one side is low, loosen the cam locks on that side, lift the shelf slightly, and re-tighten. On an uneven floor, small felt pads under one corner can solve the problem without altering the rack itself.

For the wall-mounted version, the most common issue is a plate that was screwed on slightly tilted. If the rack sits crooked, unscrew the plate, re-mark the holes using the level, and re-drill if necessary. Plaster walls may need heavier plugs than the ones supplied; if the screws pull out, switch to a toggle bolt rated for the rack's weight. A loaded spice rack can weigh several kilograms, so the fixing needs to be secure.

After leveling, test the rack by placing a few full jars on it. The countertop version should not wobble; the wall version should not tilt forward. If the rack has a magnetic front for the tins, check that the magnets hold firmly and that the tins do not interfere with the rack's alignment. Tighten every screw one final time, then load the rest of your spices.

Troubleshooting Common Assembly Problems

The most frequent issue is a cam lock that will not turn. This usually means the cam bolt is not aligned with the slot in the cam lock. Loosen the bolt, rotate the cam lock so its slot faces the bolt, and try again. Do not force the cam lock with pliers; it can strip the metal and ruin the fitting. If a bolt is cross-threaded, remove it and start it by hand before using the screwdriver.

A back panel that will not fit into its groove may be warped or the frame may be out of square. Check that all four corners of the frame are at right angles by measuring the diagonals with a tape measure; they should be equal. If the panel is still tight, sand the edges lightly with fine sandpaper rather than forcing it. For wall racks, a common mistake is mounting the plate upside down, which makes the hooks face the wrong way. Compare the plate to the diagram before drilling.

If a screw is stripped or a plug spins in the wall, do not keep turning it. Remove the screw, fill the hole with a wall repair compound, let it dry, and re-drill.
