How to Install Kmart Drawer Dividers in Kitchen Drawers: Myth vs. Reality

Myth: All Kmart Drawer Dividers Fit Every Kitchen Drawer

Reality: Kmart sells several styles of drawer dividers, and they are not one-size-fits-all. The most common types are the bamboo expandable dividers and the plastic or metal spring-loaded versions. Each has a different width range, and none will magically stretch beyond its stated limits.

Before buying, measure the inside width of your drawer at the top, middle, and bottom. Drawer sides often taper slightly. If the divider's minimum width is larger than your drawer's narrowest point, it will not stay in place. If its maximum is smaller than the widest point, it will fall over.

Check the product packaging for the exact width range in centimetres. Kmart's bamboo dividers typically adjust between roughly 25–45 cm, but this varies by batch and product line. Write down your drawer measurements and compare them before purchasing, not after.

Myth: You Need Tools and Drilling to Install Them

Reality: Most Kmart drawer dividers are designed to be tool-free. Bamboo expandable dividers use a spring-loaded mechanism with a twist-lock or push-button adjustment. You simply compress the divider to the drawer's width, place it inside, and release. The tension holds it in place against the drawer sides.

Plastic spring-loaded versions work the same way. There is no need for screws, adhesive, or drilling. If you find that a divider slides when you open and close the drawer, you have either chosen the wrong size or the drawer sides are too smooth and vertical for the friction pads to grip.

One exception: if you want a permanent, custom layout, you can use small adhesive strips or double-sided tape on the bottom of the divider. But this is optional and makes future reconfiguration harder. For most kitchens, the tension fit alone is sufficient.

To get it straight, press the divider down firmly onto the drawer bottom first, then adjust the angle. Many bamboo dividers have a flat base that helps them stand upright. If your drawer has a liner or is uneven, the divider may rock. A thin non-slip mat under the divider can fix this without glue.

Also, check that the drawer slides are not obstructing the divider. In deep drawers, the metal slide rails on the sides can prevent a divider from sitting flush. In that case, position the divider slightly away from the rail or choose a shorter divider.

Myth: Once Installed, a Divider Never Moves

Reality: Tension-mounted dividers can shift over time, especially in a busy kitchen drawer that is opened and closed dozens of times a day. The constant vibration and the weight of items pushing against the divider gradually reduce the grip.

If your divider keeps sliding, first check that it is the correct size. A divider that is at the very edge of its range will not hold. Second, clean the drawer sides with a damp cloth to remove grease or dust, which reduces friction. Third, some dividers have rubber or silicone pads on the ends; make sure these are intact.

For heavy items like cast-iron pans or stacks of plates, a tension divider may not be enough. In those cases, consider a fixed wooden divider that you screw into the drawer sides, or use multiple smaller dividers to distribute the load. For everyday cutlery and utensils, the tension type works fine.

Myth: You Can Only Use Kmart Dividers in Kmart Drawers

Reality: Kmart drawer dividers are generic storage products. They work in any drawer that matches their width range, regardless of the furniture brand. The only thing that matters is the internal dimensions of your drawer, not where the drawer came from.

However, there is a real compatibility issue: drawer depth. A tall divider meant for a deep drawer will stick up above a shallow drawer, making it impossible to close. Conversely, a short divider in a deep drawer leaves a gap underneath where small items escape. Measure the inside height of your drawer as well as the width.

Also, the material of the drawer matters. Bamboo dividers grip best on wood or painted surfaces. On metal or plastic drawers, the smooth surface may cause slipping. If you have metal drawers, look for dividers with stronger springs or add rubber grip pads yourself.
